Background
I originally studied English Literature at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and set up my editing business after graduating from Anglia Ruskin University with an MA in Creative Writing.
Since then I’ve worked for a broad spectrum of clients – from those who are self-publishing novels or memoirs for the first time to copy editing academic books for Taylor & Francis and Routledge.
My clients often compliment me on my eagle-eyed attention to detail but I am also extremely good at seeing how the individual parts contribute to a satisfying whole or – to paraphrase Chekhov – at making sure that if you have led the reader to expect a turn of events then something happens even if it’s not what they were expecting (maybe the gun isn’t loaded – to continue the Chekhov comparison). The romance reader wants their Happy Ever After; a fan of action and suspense will be thrilled to say ‘I didn’t see that coming’; even non-fiction follows a narrative (as in a memoir) or needs to set its arguments out clearly (as in a textbook).
I specialise in editing women and children’s fiction but am happy to edit all genres and lengths except horror, erotica or anything with lots of swearing and violence. I am however happy to refer writers in those genres to fellow editors who are willing to work on texts of a darker nature.
As an author myself I understand how precious your work is to you and will be constructive in my criticism.
My aim is always to make your writing the best it can be, in other words to make it shine.
